Empowering Students through Visual Analytics: A Dashboard Redesign for Modern Curricula

The study progress dashboard at TU Graz was rebuilt technically and conceptually — the paper describes the overhaul and analyses five years of usage.

The dashboard introduced in 2020 had to be rebuilt between 2022 and 2024: TU Graz changed the way it models academic data, and the legacy curricula were phased out. The paper presents the new version and draws conclusions from feedback and usage data for comparable undertakings.

Best Paper Award

The paper received a Best Paper Award from the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) at EdMedia + Innovate Learning 2025 in Barcelona.

The new version is modular and service-oriented: curricula are read in as they currently stand instead of living in a copy of their own, and the analysis combines an individual student’s records with historical data from the same degree programme. All Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes at TU Graz are supported.

The underlying principle is unchanged: students should be able to understand their progress and plan on their own. The paper describes which feedback and usage patterns since 2020 led to which decision — and what follows for institutions that want to build an adaptable, student-centred learning analytics offering.
